Overview
The historical process is the ultimate measure of sustainability and resilience. To achieve our sustainable urban future, it is critical to learn from historical cities that have adapted themselves and stood the test of time and changing circumstances over centuries and millennia, or failed to do so and demised. We aim to identify, analyse, and assess relevant practices in planning and design, governance, and daily operations in historical urbanisms. We will focus on the three key, interrelated areas of enquiry: historical knowledge and experience, the historical urban landscape, and urban re-inventiveness. Delving into these areas could shed important light on our understanding of how historical cities achieve, or fail to achieve, sustainability and resilience and how these may best inform our planning and design, governance, and daily operations today.
